City Offers Community Arts Grants

The City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office is seeking applications for its annual Community Arts Grants program. Funds totaling $80,000 will be awarded in matching grants for cultural projects occurring in the City of Carlsbad in the year 2017. The grant application deadline is Monday, Oct. 31, 2016. Applicants will receive notification of awarded grants by December.

A Community Arts Grants application workshop will be held to assist potential applicants in creating successful proposals; all applicants are strongly urged to attend, as the application process has been updated for the 2017 cycle.

The workshop will be held on Monday, Sept. 19, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Community Room at the Georgina Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Lane.

“The Community Arts Grants program supports schools as well as local nonprofits, providing cultural and artistic opportunities for all ages,” said Megan Gilby, City of Carlsbad cultural arts program coordinator. “The cultural arts contribute to our creative community and the high quality of life we enjoy in Carlsbad. We’re proud that each year, Community Arts Grants benefit thousands of residents.”

Applications and guidelines, as well as listings of previous grant recipients, are available on the City of Carlsbad website, www.carlsbadca.gov/arts, at Cultural Arts Office, located within the Carlsbad City Library complex, 1775 Dove Lane. Applications are available online at www.carlsbadca.gov/arts or by request at 760-602-2090.

The grants, which must be matched by money from other sources, are awarded to nonprofit organizations, schools and school-related organizations for visual, media, literary and performing arts projects taking place in Carlsbad. Arts organizations located elsewhere in San Diego County are also eligible to apply but funded activities must take place in Carlsbad.

Projects must fit one of two categories in the Community Arts Grants Funding Program, Arts Projects and Arts in Schools. Arts Projects fund requests by arts nonprofit organizations for specific project activities such as performances, exhibitions, residencies, workshops or lectures in all artistic disciplines that provide arts opportunities to people in Carlsbad.

The Arts in Schools category supports requests of up to $1,500 by Carlsbad schools and eligible school-related organizations for in-class and before/after-school projects involving professional artists, including artist-in-residence activities, collaborative programs and events by student artists that are open to the public, as well as support for activities of school-based, student extracurricular organizations that the public may attend.

Past successful proposals have included music festivals, concerts, free outdoor theater, visual arts demonstrations and mural projects, choreographer residencies, artist-led training seminars for teachers and a variety of school activities promoting student participation in the arts.
