Community Center Project Receives Award

The City of Carlsbad’s Pine Avenue Community Center and Gardens project has been awarded the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2019 Outstanding Project award in the category of Community Improvement. The city will be recognized at the Society’s annual awards luncheon on Friday, April 26 at The Dana on Mission Bay in San Diego. 

The 8.2 acre Pine Avenue Community Park located in northwest Carlsbad at the intersection of Pine Avenue and Harding Street, is home to a new inter-generational community center that offers the city's teen programs, youth day camps, classes for all ages, open gym hours and the Senior Center. Located in the historic Barrio neighborhood, the park has special significance to multiple generations of Carlsbad residents as the former site of Pine Elementary School.


  • 18,000 square foot inter-generational community center with meeting/activity rooms, multipurpose gymnasium and teen room with computer and homework rooms and a game area.
  • Synthetic turf multiuse sports field
  • Informal amphitheater
  • Lighted outdoor basketball courts
  • Picnic areas, including two covered picnic areas with barbecues
  • Children's play area
  • Ornamental gardens (drought tolerant)
  • Community gathering plaza with shade structure
  • Community garden with raised planters and demonstration area 

The city’s civil engineering subconsultant, BergerABAM, nominated the Pine Avenue Community Center and Gardens project for this prestigious award.
