New Playground, Pickleball Courts and Multi-sports Arena
A new, expanded playground has opened at Poinsettia Community Park along with the city’s first outdoor dedicated pickleball courts and an arena sports field. The new amenities are part of an updated park plan, which also includes a new dog park that should be winter 2020/21.
The new six-court pickleball area at the north end of the park a nod to what has been described a mix between tennis, racquetball and ping pong. Players use special paddles and a wiffle ball and play on courts slightly smaller than tennis courts. The game has attracted enthusiastic supporters in Carlsbad, who now have a new dedicated place to play. The fences around the courts have been outfitted with special sound dampening material since the balls and paddles tend to make more noise than their tennis counterparts.
The new playground area replaced the existing one at the same location. Two play areas, one for younger kids and one for older, feature modern, interactive equipment with lots of shade and places to sit. The playground was designed to be accessible for kids of all abilities.
The new multi-sport arena features synthetic turf, bleachers and warm-up areas.
