Grilling Safety Tips

With Labor Day weekend approaching, the City of Carlsbad Fire Department reminds residents considering firing up their grills to follow these important safety tips:

  • Wear clothing and accessories that are appropriate for grilling, including gloves, an apron and sunglasses, which will keep smoke and any food splatter out of your eyes
  • Use grills outdoors only
  • Place the grill away from siding and deck railings, and do not place underneath eaves and/or overhanging branches
  • Create a safe work space by keeping the grill out of the reach of children and pets
  • Keep the grill attended at all times
  • Place the grill on a flat, solid surface
  • Keep the grill and trays clean of grease and fat build-up
  • Shut off propane tanks when not in use
  • Keep flammable liquids away from the grill
  • Watch the use of lighter fluid with charcoal grills to make sure that you don’t use too much
  • Cool coals from charcoal grill in a metal container before disposing of them
  • Keep a lid on hand to smother grease fires
  • Place a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby
