What's Open & Closed

The city is closely following the state and county public health orders to help slow the spread of COVID-19.


Businesses still allowed to operate

All essential businesses as defined by the governor’s health order. These include:

Health care

Grocery stores and markets

Convenience stores

Big box stores selling food and essential household items

Restaurants for delivery and pick up only

Hardware and home improvement stores

City services

All essential city services are being provided, but most buildings are closed to in person service, including:


City Hall

Faraday Administration Center

Public Safety and Service Center


Senior Center (M-F meal service for those 60 and older will continue outside on a pickup basis and by delivery)

Community centers, aquatic centers and all parks buildings except restrooms


Outdoor spaces closed

All city parks and trails
All beaches (both city and state controlled), including the water
All beach parking lots

All parks and recreation parking lots

Carlsbad Boulevard parking from Pine to La Costa avenues, Ponto Drive and Ponto Road 
Lower sea wall (bathrooms still open)

Boating for recreational purposes, watersports and swimming in public waterways and at all beaches

Agua Hedionda Lagoon inner basin (area east of I-5) including launching area on north side of lagoon

Athletic fields
Basketball courts 
Dog parks 
Pickleball courts
Picnic amenities 
Skate parks
Tennis courts

Swimming pools


Events and programs

City programs and events are canceled through April 30. These include:

Earth Month celebrations
Arbor Day
Preschool program
Trail volunteer events
Carlsbad Reads Together Tara Westover author visit
Parks & Recreation programs and classes
Senior Center programs and classes
Sports leagues
Library programs and events
Cultural arts events


All events with city permits also canceled as well as room and facility reservations through April 30.
