Livable Streets

People of all ages and abilities want to go places safely and conveniently in Carlsbad. Whether they drive, walk, bike, or ride a bus or train. The livable streets concept, also called "complete streets," acknowledges that streets are an important part of the livability of today's communities and ought to be for everyone. We have made livable streets a priority as we plan improvements to our roadways. View the Carlsbad Livable Assessment Report for more information.

What Does a "Livable Street" Look Like?

There is no single way to design a complete street. Instead, complete streets are designed in the context of the local community. They often include sidewalks, bike lanes, comfortable and accessible public transportation stops, frequent and safe crosswalks, median islands, accessible pedestrian signals, curb extensions, narrower travel lanes
and roundabouts. They also help contribute to a community’s sense of place through high quality design, landscaping and even art.

Complete streets improve the safety, efficiency and capacity of existing roads by moving more people in the same amount of space. They balance the use of the public right of way for the various modes of travel and as such they promote healthy lifestyles and help create a greater sense of community.

Carlsbad Boulevard

Carlsbad is working on a number of projects along Carlsbad Boulevard to create a scenic coastal corridor that invites people to enjoy the natural beauty of our coastline, whether on foot, by bike or in a car. In recent years, the city has improved bike lanes, put in new crosswalks and installed North County's first coastal roundabout, all in an effort to transform Carlsbad Boulevard from a high speed highway to a local roadway that can be enjoyed by all users.

Reducing Speeding in Neighborhoods

Speeding on residential streets can have a negative effect on the quality of life and the feeling of safety in residential neighborhoods. The Residential Traffic Management Plan helps redefine the residential neighborhood streets and slows vehicles down.

Modern Roundabouts

Think you know roundabouts?  Think again. Today's modern roundabouts are becoming more popular as communities realize the many advantages over traditional intersections, including safety, increased access for bikers and walkers, less air pollution, smoother traffic flow and creating a more inviting community.  Watch this video produced by the U.S. Department of Transportation to learn more.
